Peugeot is taking its first steps into the electrification era
The French brand has announced the arrival of the 3008 SUV and 508 sedan plug-in hybrids, which are due to land in showrooms at the start of next year.
Peugeot Australia boss Kate Gillis says the arrival of the two petrol-electric models is part of the brand’s global strategy to have an electrified variant in every model range by 2025.
A plug-in hybrid combines a petrol engine with an electric motor and small battery.
Plug-in hybrids differ from conventional hybrids – popularly used by brands such as Toyota – be being able to drive on pure electric power for a substantial distance.
Peugeot is only offering the 3008 plug-in hybrid in the well-equipped GT Sport specification with prices starting at $79,990 before on-road costs.
This is about $25,000 more than the equivalent petrol-only model.
The plug-in hybrid brings a big jump in performance combining a 147kW four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors – one on each axle – combining for 222kW.
Peugeot hasn’t provided total torque figures, though, plug-in hybrids usually have plenty of zip off the mark thanks instant torque delivery from the electric motors.
This is paired with an eight speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive grip.
The 13.2kWh battery provides up to 60km of pure electric driving range.
Peugeot has packed in plenty of gear including supple Nappa leather appointed trim, edgy 19-inch alloy wheels and plenty of black exterior styling highlights.
Inside, a 12.3-inch digital cockpit is coupled with a 10-inch central touchscreen, while a premium Focal stereo adds to the experience.
This is joined by the swoopy 508 GT plug-in hybrid fastback.
The svelte looking sedan is priced from $76,990 before on-road costs, this is about $18,000 more than the petrol-only version.
This model combines a 133kW four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a single electric motor for a total outputs of 165kW. This is paired with an eight-speed auto driving the front wheels.
An 11.8kWh battery pack allows for up to 55km of pure electric driving range.
Equipment highlights include the same digital screens as the 3008 and a 10-speaker Focal stereo with a subwoofer. 18-inch alloy-wheels and premium leather seat trim add a premium feel to the car.
Peugeot will reveal full specification and details closer to the car’s launch date.
