JOHANNESBURG – Kaizer Chiefs condemned supporters after the incident at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Saturday following the 1-0 loss to Supersport United where head coach Arthur Zwane was injured.

Zwane sustained a cut to his cheek as he was escorted off the field by the police and security officers when disgruntled fans began throwing objects in the direction of the coach in a desperate show of anger.

Chiefs issued a statement confirming that Zwane was okay after receiving treatment in the aftermath of the crowd trouble and wouldn’t require any further medical attention.

“As much as the club understands that supporters were disappointed with the result, such expressions of dissatisfaction as were seen in Phokeng on Saturday are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. Hence, we implore all our supporters to please refrain from any form of violence,” the statement reads.

The loss to United consigned Amakhosi to their 11th defeat, the most they’ve suffered in a DSTV Premiership campaign and leaves them with no prospect of continental competition, as they wrap up an 8th consecutive trophyless season.

Chiefs implored their fans to support their under pressure coach and the team ahead of their last game against Cape Town City at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

“As we prepare for our last game of the season, we call on the Amakhosi faithful to rally behind the team and the coach and inspire us to finish the season in style. The players and the technical team are giving their best out there, so let’s stick together and give them all the support we can,” the club said.

At the time of publication, the Premier Soccer League had not yet commented on Saturday’s events and it remained to be seen whether the club would be sanctioned.
