New York Yankees fans were left furious after Aaron Judge was left out of the team for Sunday’s series decider against the Baltimore Orioles – days after he finally returned from a sprained toe.

Judge hit a home run – his 20th of the season – as the Yankees beat the Orioles 8-3 on Saturday night and it is hoped by Yankees fans that his return to health will coincide with a return to form for the team.

He played his first game back on Friday and spraining his toe against the Dodgers when he crashed through a fence in the outfield on June 3.

But much to the fury of the New York fanbase, Judge was left off the team on Sunday as coach Aaron Boone looks to ease his workload after nearly two months out.

And it backfired for the Yankees – fast. They conceded seven runs in the first inning – Adam Frazier with a three-run homer – in a nightmare start for pitcher Luis Severino. The Orioles went on to record a 9-3 victory and win the series.

There was also a season high 18 strikeouts from the Yankees offense without star man Judge but Boone claimed he saw reason for optimism.

‘Outside of the strikeouts, I thought at-bats were building off of last night,’ he said. ‘I thought we grinded out really well. We made it really tough on Kremer.

‘We couldn’t finish off. We had a couple of good scoring opportunities with the bases loaded but they beat us up with the strikeout too. 18, that’s a big number.’

As the team was announced on Twitter, one Yankees fan wrote: ‘Not like this is a must win game or anything… he’ll have plenty of time to rest in October at this rate.’

Another said: ‘This organization is not entitled to a playoff spot. Completely unserious lineup for a team in this current situation.’

It was Boone who was the subject of a lot of the anger, with some fans calling for him to be fired.

‘Aaron Boone, you need to be fired for malpractice. The rubber match against the best team in the AL and first place in your division and you sit Aaron Judge. Get his goddamn bat in the lineup,’ one Yankees fan said.

A different fan compared Boone’s line-up to losing a war, saying: ‘Aaron Boone is the type of guy who would not use his rifle during war because he wouldn’t want it to get jammed, so he tries to take the hill with sticks and stones. YOU’RE GONNA DIE JUST USE YOUR BEST WEAPONS!’

Another said: ‘Aaron Boone what is the harm with Judge DHing today? He also has 3 Homer’s off the starting pitcher. Are you trying to lose?’

Speaking before the game, Boone did suggest Judge could be used for pinch-hitting if needed but it never happened.

‘We’ve gotten the benefit of Aaron Judge the last two days, when maybe normally that would have been done in Somerset or somewhere else,’ Boone said in the build-up.

The Yankees manager had also hinted at the start of the series that he would rest Judge for a game ahead of a huge week ahead with the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros heading to Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees are back in action on Monday night against the Rays.
