Wrexham co-owners Reynolds and McElhenney hail their team after FA Cup loss to Sheffield United

Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have hailed the team’s efforts after their FA Cup run was finally ended by Sheffield United on Tuesday night.

Having come within seconds of knocking the Championship club out in their first meeting, Wrexham held their own for much of the replay at Bramall Lane, as Paul Mullins’ penalty cancelled out Anel Ahmedhodzic’s opener.

However, the night ended in heartbreak for the National League outfit, with added-time goals from Billy Sharp and Sander Berge sending the Blades through to the fifth round to face Tottenham.

Hollywood actor Reynolds was still delighted with what he saw from his team, though, and tweeted about his pride after the match.

‘So proud of these boys. And the 4000 plus away supporters who gave it all,’ Reynolds posted.

Fellow actor McElhenney was equally proud of his side, writing: ‘I could not be more proud of those men than I am right now. They gave it absolutely everything.’

Since Reynolds and McElhenney took over in November 2020, Wrexham have been making steady progress, but their FA Cup run has been a breakthrough moment that has thrust them firmly into the spotlight.

They dumped Championship side Coventry out in the third round, and nearly did the same to Sheffield United in the last-32. 

The Welsh side are also doing well in the fifth tier, as they sit second in the table, three points behind Notts County but with two games in hand.

McElhenney was keen not to dwell on Tuesday’s defeat as he turned his attention to getting Wrexham back into League Two.

‘Now let’s go win this f****** league,’ he added in a separate tweet.
