Kostyuk took the second set before getting an early break in the third set which swayed the match in her favour.

Swan, making her fifth appearance at Wimbledon as a wildcard, recovered from a difficult start to claim the opener in a hard-hitting battle against World No 76 Kostyuk.

Swan, ranked 184 in the world and British number six, looked like she might reach the second round when she retrieved a break in the second set to make it 4-4.

It was then where she began to noticeably wince and called the trainer over after dropping serve in the next game.

Swan battled on resiliently despite her apparent struggles, and suffered a 4-6 6-4 6-4 defeat.
