WhatsApp bans over 23 lakh Indian accounts in October

Meta’s instant messaging service WhatsApp on Wednesday said it banned 23,24,000 bad accounts between October 1, 2022 and October 31, 2022. Of these, WhatsApp said over 8.11 lakh accounts were proactively banned, before any reports from users.

WhatsApp published these numbers as part of the guidelines under the new IT Rules 2021 that mandates digital and social media platforms, with more than 5 million users, to publish monthly compliance reports.

“WhatsApp banned over 2.3 million accounts in the month of October… In addition to responding to and actioning on user complaints through the grievance channel, WhatsApp also deploys tools and resources to prevent harmful behavior on the platform. We are particularly focused on prevention because we believe it is much better to stop harmful activity from happening in the first place than to detect it after harm has occurred,” WhatsApp said in its report.

WhatsApp banned over 26 lakh accounts in the month of September. October’s numbers are slightly lower than the previous month but are in line with the company’s numbers in July and August when WhatsApp banned over 23 lakh accounts.
However, the number of grievance requests WhatsApp got in October, were higher than that of September. In October, WhatsApp received 701 grievance reports and actioned 34 of them, while in September, it received 666 grievance reports from India, and the platform actioned 23..

In October, 550 reports were for a ban appeal, and the rest were under other categories like support and safety, the company said.

“‘Accounts Actioned’ denotes reports where we took remedial action based on the report,” WhatsApp said. “Taking action denotes either banning an account or a previously banned account being restored as a result of the complaint.”

Further the company said that reports may have been reviewed but not included as ‘Actioned’ for several reasons, including that the user required assistance from the company to access their account, use one of the features, was providing feedback, requests for restoration of a banned account were denied or because the reported account did not violate the laws of the country or WhatsApp’s Terms of Service.
