WhatsApp announces additional security features for users

Global instant messaging giant WhatsApp on Thursday announced additional security features including back-end invisible check of devices on which the app is installed “to help prevent a malware on a device” from impacting the services of the messaging app.

“Mobile device malware is one of the biggest threats to people’s privacy and security today because it can take advantage of your phone without your permission and use your WhatsApp to send unwanted messages. To help prevent this, we have added checks to help authenticate your account- with no action needed from you – and better protect you if your device is compromised,” the company said in a release.

Apart from this, WhatsApp will also introduce a new security feature that will send out additional alerts if someone tries to move their messaging account from one registered device to a new device. For this, WhatsApp may ask the user to confirm from their existing device if they indeed want to move their account to a new device.

A third new security feature WhatsApp announced is automated verification of a secure connection with the intended recipient of the message, the company said.

“To do so, we are building on key transparency by developing a new Auditable Key Directory (AKD), which is based on an open-sourced library. The AKD will enable WhatsApp clients to automatically validate that a user’s encryption key is genuine,” WhatsApp said in a blog post.
