Weather wreaks havoc on day three of WA vs Tasmania

Inclement weather has prevented Western Australia from extending its lead over Tasmania, as Cameron Green failed to shine.

Despite multiple rain delays, Western Australia managed to stretch its lead to 116 runs against Tasmania on day three of their Sheffield Shield clash at the WACA.

The morning session was wiped out due to the inclement weather, and only 45 minutes of cricket were played before a clear and uninterrupted afternoon session ensued.

Before the first ball of the day, Tasmania was forced into a reshuffle as Lawrence Neil-Smith was ruled out, having failed a concussion test after he was struck on the helmet by Lance Morris on Monday.

Riley Meredith took his place in the line-up, and was permitted to both bat and bowl in his role as a replacement player.

WA’s Shaun Marsh and Sam Whiteman looked to be building a solid partnership in the time they were at the crease, but their 84-run stand was broken thanks to Tasmania spinner Jarrod Freeman.

Freeman tossed a full delivery at Whiteman and left the batsman trapped in front of the stumps, as the umpire sent him on his way for 49.

Cameron Green made his way to the crease and got off the mark quickly, but his innings was cut short by evergreen bowler Peter Siddle, who removed the youngster for 13 via LBW.

The 22-year-old was not pleased with the decision, feeling he caught an inside edge on Siddle’s delivery, but the umpire saw otherwise.

Marsh was joined by Hilton Cartwright in the middle of the ground, but the latter only faced three balls before the umpires halted play for the final time due to fading light.

The Tasmanians would no doubt be disappointed with the timing of the umpires’ decision to end the day’s play, as they were on a run of 2-25 with the wickets of Whiteman and Green.

The Apple Isle team will need seven wickets tomorrow, as Marsh looks to continue his time at the crease and build on an unbeaten knock of 45.

Siddle was the pick of the bowlers for Tasmania, finishing day three with figures of 2/19 off 13 overs.
