Virat Kohli trumped Dhoni in social media chatter during IPL 2023: Report

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) Virat Kohli has won the social media battle against his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni by garnering more social media mentions during the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, says a report by Interactive Avenues, the digital arm of IPG Mediabrands India.

The social media listening report titled ‘IPL 2023: Unveiling the Roar’ stated that Kohli, with 7 million social media mentions across IPL 2023, emerged as the most popular player on social media despite RCB getting knocked out of the playoffs. Dhoni, who garnered 6 million mentions, was outperformed by Kohli.

CSK won the IPL in 2023, giving them a total of five victories since the competition began.

The report also notes that Kohli generated more brand-related chatter than the next nine players combined. This, the report added, showcases his influence and engagement on social platforms.

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma was a distant third with 3 million social media mentions. CSK’s Ravindra Jadeja, Gujarat Titans’ Shubhman Gill, and MI’s Suryakumar Yadav had 1 million social media mentions each.

Rinku Singh’s historic match-winning knock against the Gujarat Titans received the highest number of social media likes, while Kohli’s controversial argument with Gautam Gambhir and Naveen ul-Haq generated the most mentions (270K) and engagement (4 million).
