US open golf 2023 title contender Wyndham Clark talks about late tee times

Wyndham Clark, one of the contenders for the U.S. Open title, indirectly criticized the United States Golf Association (USGA) for the late tee times on Saturday’s third round, which he claimed cost him and Rickie Fowler strokes.

Clark, who teed off last with Fowler at 3:40 p.m. local time (6:40 p.m. ET) and concluded their round at 7:56 p.m. (10:56 p.m. ET) at Los Angeles Country Club, attributed his bogey on the 17th hole and Fowler’s bogey on the 18th hole to the diminishing daylight.

“It’s a bit absurd that we teed off that late,” expressed Clark. “Around hole 15 or 16, visibility started to become an issue. Personally, I don’t understand why we played twilight golf. It’s tough and somewhat crazy to think that we experienced these conditions on the last two holes of a major when we could have teed off two hours earlier. Hopefully, we won’t face the same problem tomorrow.”

Clark and Fowler are scheduled to tee off at 5:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.

The USGA, responsible for organizing the U.S. Open and determining tee times, has not provided an immediate response to Clark’s comments. The late tee times on Saturday allowed NBC to broadcast the tournament during prime time.

Entering the final round on Sunday, Clark and Fowler share the lead at 10-under par.Clark secured his first PGA Tour victory in May by winning the Wells Fargo Championship. His best finish at a major tournament thus far is a tie for 75th place.FAQs
