England has revealed an unchanged 14-player squad for the upcoming fourth Ashes Test, set to take place at Old Trafford. Surrey wicketkeeper Ben Foakes has once again been overlooked, with Jonny Bairstow expected to continue as the designated gloveman.
Unfortunately, Ollie Pope will be absent from the squad due to a shoulder injury he sustained during the second Test at Lord’s, ruling him out for the remainder of the summer. In the previous match, England secured a hard-fought three-wicket victory, narrowing the series margin to 2-1 in favor of Australia, with two Tests remaining. The fourth Test is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, July 19.
Although rested for the third Test, veteran seam bowler James Anderson could potentially make his return to the England lineup at his home ground. The 40-year-old may be called upon to replace Ollie Robinson, who experienced a back spasm during Australia’s first innings in the previous match and subsequently didn’t bowl for the remainder of the game. Another contender for a recall is Josh Tongue, who impressed during the second Test at Lord’s. However, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes, both of whom made impactful contributions in their first Test appearances of the summer, are also strong options. Wood, in particular, was named the player of the match after claiming seven wickets, while Woakes made significant contributions with six wickets and an unbeaten knock of 32 runs in England’s second innings, guiding them to victory.
