Jones was expected to return at UFC 285 on March 4 in Las Vegas and take on heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou – but on Saturday night he confirmed French star Ciryl Gane has landed the coveted bout.
Jones let the cat out of the bag in an interview with fellow MMA star Henry Cejudo’s Youtube channel.
‘I’m glad I did come out here. Henry is just so intelligent, and such a great leader and tactician. It’s just been great, it’s been a really great trip so far,’ Jones said.
‘Day one of four, just a few weeks out from my first heavyweight championship against Ciryl Gane.’
The statement from Jones came just hours after a sign at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas – which will host UFC 285 – advertised the bout before Jones or the governing body had confirmed it.
Two photos of the billboard sent social media into a frenzy, with some fans believing the signage to be a ‘behind-the-scenes mistake’.
The UFC had made no official announcement of the bout – and it is not known if the clash will be for an interim belt or the heavyweight championship.

UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou recently sparked speculation that he could be about to jump ship to a rival promotion after sharing photos of a family member wearing a Professional Fighters League T-shirt.
On December 10, ‘The Predator’ stated that his ‘second career was coming up soon’ and that he was about to begin a ‘new chapter’, leading many to think his days with the UFC are coming to an end.
Some experts think his contract with the organisation has expired, making him a free agent.

The Frenchman would make an interesting opponent for ‘Bones’. Gane has only lost once – to Ngannou last January – and is widely regarded as the best striker in the heavyweight division.
Jones has a 26-1 record in the light heavyweight division, with one no contest because he tested positive for a prohibited steroid after his knockout win over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 in July 2017.
