News agency Reuters reported that Irwin told the publication that she has resigned from the social media company that has been facing “criticism for lax protections against harmful content” since Musk purchased it in October.
Irwin joined Twitter in June 2022 and took over as head of the trust and safety team in November when Yoel Roth, who previously headed the team, resigned. Irwin oversaw content moderation.
Twitter struggles to moderate content
According to the report, Irwin’s departure comes as Twitter is struggling to retain advertisers as brands are wary that their ads may appear next to unsuitable content.
Musk has already chosen Linda Yaccarino, former NBCUniversal advertising chief, as Twitter’s new CEO.
With a thin staff, Twitter is apparently finding it difficult to moderate content on the platform. However, he has promoted Community Notes, a feature that enables a few users to add context to tweets, to combat misleading information on the platform.
The company has also announced that it will expand the Community Notes features to images and videos to enable users to differentiate between AI-generated photos and real ones.
Recently, Twitter withdrew from a voluntary agreement with the European Union to tackle disinformation. The move has attracted scrutiny from regulators over the company’s moderation efforts.
EU industry chief Thierry Breton warned Twitter last week that the company would not be able to avoid legal obligations in the EU after quitting the voluntary agreement.
Twitter bans over 25 lakh accounts in India
Earlier this week, Twitter said in its report that it has banned a record 25,51,623 accounts in India between March 26 and April 25. These handles were banned for promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity. The microblogging platform also took down 2,249 accounts for promoting terrorism on Twitter in the country.
