Twitter employee seeks clarification from Elon Musk on employment status, finds out he’s been sacked

Haraldur Thorleifsson, who claims to work at Twitter since February 2021, took to the microblogging platform to know about his employee status, saying he could no longer access his work computer.

He added that the head of HR at the company is unable to confirm whether he is an employee, to which he had to use the microblogging site and tag Musk for clarification.

Tagging Elon Musk in his post, Thorleifsson wrote “Dear Elon Musk, 9 days ago the access to my work computer was cut, along with about 200 other Twitter employees. However, your head of HR is not able to confirm if I am an employee or not. You’ve not answered my emails,” he tweeted. “Maybe if enough people retweet you’ll answer me here?”

Soon, Musk responded and asked about his job profile. Thorleifsson mentioned the Twitter confidentiality clause and asked if he is allowed to answer it openly. After Musk’s go-ahead, Thorleifsson disclosed his job profile and the specific work he was doing at Twitter.

He shared the list of duties he performed at Twitter during his stint. He revealed that he led the effort to save about $500k on one SaaS contract. Supported closing down many others.

Musk replied with laughing emojis, without specifying his employment status. Thorleifsson is an Icelandic entrepreneur and had founded of the company Ueno, which he sold to Twitter in 2021.

Hours later, Thorleifsson said he was formally told that he had been fired.

“All of the sudden, Twitter’s head of HR (who had previously twice been unable to tell me if I had a job or not) emailed and said I was no longer employed. Which is totally ok and it happens all the time. Companies let people go, that’s within their rights. They usually tell people about it but that’s seemingly the optional part at Twitter now… Next up though is finding out if Twitter will pay me what they owe me per my contract. Or, will one of the richest people in the world, try to avoid paying?,” he tweeted.
