Australia closed day one of the final Test of the Ashes needing 222 after picking up four runs in the final over and bowling England out for 283.

Chris Woakes helped drag England to that score before he then dismissed David Warner as the Australians took to the bat.

The Aussies will have a tally of 283 to surpass on Friday.

They dropped five catches, crucially Brook when he had scored just five. However, they will be the happier of the two teams ahead of day two.

Mail Sport’s LAWRENCE BOOTH takes a look at the big stats.

HARRY BROOK JOINS THE RECORD BOOKS

Harry Brook’s 11th score of 50 or more from his 19 Test innings leaves him with an average of 65 – the highest by an England player with at least 500 runs. Next comes fellow Yorkshireman Herbert Sutcliffe, who made 4,555 at 60.

MITCHELL STARC DISMISSES STOKES AGAIN

Mitchell Starc’s dismissal of Ben Stokes, bowled for three, means only Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has taken his wicket more times in Tests – 11 to Starc’s nine. Australia’s injured off-spinner Nathan Lyon has also removed Stokes nine times.

DAVID WARNER’S DISMISSAL

After falling three times in the series to Stuart Broad, David Warner has now fallen three innings in a row to Chris Woakes.

And for the fifth time in the series, he was dismissed between 24 and 36. In all, Warner’s 36 Test innings in England have produced only eight fifties and an average of 25.
