Tommy Fury signs up to play in this summer’s Soccer Aid at Old Trafford

From the Saudi spotlight to the Theatre of Dreams! Tommy Fury signs up to play in this summer’s Soccer Aid at Old Trafford as boxer and singer Liam Payne become latest names to join high-profile charity game

Boxing star Tommy Fury has confirmed that he will play in this year’s Soccer Aid as he turns his hand to football after beating Jake Paul in their grudge match in February.

Fury earned a split-decision victory over his American rival when they finally met inside the ring in Saudi Arabia, and there have been talks of a potential rematch between the pair.

However, Fury, who also appeared on reality TV show Love Island in 2019, has put his boxing career on hold for now to get involved in the high-profile charity match that will be held at Old Trafford on June 11.

The 23-year-old put a picture of himself and former One Direction star Liam Payne head-to-head on Instagram on Wednesday, leading to some speculation that the duo could be set for a shock boxing match at the Theatre of Dreams this summer.

But most fans figured out this is also the venue being used for Soccer Aid this year, and Fury confirmed the news on Twitter on Thursday.

‘SOCCER AID 2023! I’m coming for you on Sunday 11 June,’ Fury wrote.

Payne has also signed up, and he and Fury will be on opposite teams, with Fury part of the World XI squad, while Payne will be representing England.

Fury, who is the younger brother of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson, joins a team that will be captained by sprinting icon Usain Bolt. Former Tottenham and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane will be among the coaches for the World XI outfit.

Payne goes into an England squad to be led by Lionesses legend Jill Scott.

Scott earned 161 caps for her country and won the European Championships before hanging up her boots last year, and she went on to win I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in December.

The England team will include former Three Lions stars such as Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Jermain Defoe, while Sir Mo Farah is also set to feature once more.

Chelsea women’s manager Emma Hayes and Harry Redknapp will be in the dugout for England.

Soccer Aid is an annual event held to raise money for the children’s charity UNICEF.
