Tiktok: This is what Snap CEO has to say on TikTok ban – Times of India

At the Snap Partner Summit held on April 19, when asked about his thoughts on a potential ban on TikTok, Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap (formerly known as Snapchat), responded enthusiastically, saying, “we’d love that.” And the crowd cheered, but Spiegel was quick to acknowledge that the excitement would not be for long.
“I do think it is important for us to be thoughtful and really develop a regulatory framework to deal with national security concerns, especially around technology,” Spiegel said. “And I think based on the information that is publicly available, there are legitimate national security concerns far above my pay grade and security clearance.”
In an effort to retain its Gen Z user base and compete with TikTok’s exponential growth, Snapchat, like many other social media platforms, has introduced its own short-form video feed and creator program.
With the possibility of a ban on TikTok being debated by U.S. legislators, companies such as Snap and Meta, which appear to be most impacted by TikTok’s popularity, are hopeful that a ban will provide them with an opportunity to benefit.
TikTok, owned by the Beijing-based company ByteDance, has faced extensive scrutiny from Congress over concerns about data and privacy due to its Chinese ownership. The company has begun Project Texas, a $1.5 billion plan to safeguard TikTok’s U.S. operations and data from foreign interference to ensure user data safety and make the lawmakers happy.
Amidst ongoing uncertainty about the future of TikTok in the US, some states have already taken action to ban the app. Recently, the Montana House of Representatives, which Republicans control, approved a bill that would prohibit downloading the TikTok app within the state. TikTok is already prohibited on government devices in the US.
It is not only the US where TikTok has to worry. Several nations across the world have been scrutinising TikTok for its relations with the Chinese government and child safety. Canada, the UK, and New Zealand are some of the nations that have banned the app on devices owned by government staff, while the app has been completely banned in India for a few years now.
