This 24-Year-Old Designer Isn’t Afraid to Make Mistakes

In How I Got Here, Black and brown creatives explore how they worked their way to the top of the fashion industry. In conversation with Vogue, these editors, social media stars, and more reveal the unforgettable moment that would change their careers completely. How I Got Here offers (stylish) life lessons, in the artists’ own words.

Designer Tia Adeola started her eponymous brand when she was just eighteen years old—in the six years since, she’s dressed Cara Delevigne, Gigi Hadid, and Sza in her feminine designs. Adeola, known for her signature sheer, ruffled, organza garments, has spent time in lockdown refining her vision and mapping out her future. In the spring of 2020, she started making distinct, ruffled facemasks, which went viral a few times. That was just the start of her ventures outside of womenswear. In a recent collaboration with Away, the designer has launched luggage for the first time, and she’ll show menswear on the runway in February.. Here, Adeola walks Vogue through her current state of mind and how she has changed for the better.

The biggest thing for me has always been getting my parents and my family to understand what I’m doing. That might sound a bit shocking, but my parents are Nigerian and live there with my entire family, and I’ve lived in New York alone since graduating from college. My mom, when she would see my organza pieces lounging around, she’d always question “what are these clothes you’re making?” My parents never quite understood my work as a designer.

During lockdown last year I was featured on CNN in an ad because I was making face masks during the pandemic that went viral on the internet a few times. When I was growing up my parents would watch CNN every single morning. It was part of our routine, almost like background noise just always there. After filming the ad I started getting calls from my parents telling me how everyone they know is calling them asking if it was their daughter. They were just so proud. They talk about it endlessly because CNN’s a platform they can relate to. So I know that for me it was a major turning point.
