The best things in Week 13 of the college football slate included Michigan’s explosive statement, an incredible Army catch and more.
The final regular season week of college football action is always a fun one. Rivalries are battled, conference title berths are claimed and all the chaos you could hope for comes through.
This year, as it often happens, the biggest of all the big games was The Game. Ohio State and Michigan had it all on the line when they faced off in The Shoe. The Wolverines came out on top with a win that set the stage for a riveting Saturday.
Here’s all the things that made Week 13 great.
Most impressive performance of the week: Michigan’s big-play offense
Michigan had 12 plays of 40+ yards coming into Saturday. They blew up Ohio State’s defense with five explosive touchdowns of more than 40 yards.
It was entirely surprising to see the Wolverines get one over on the Buckeyes in that way. It wasn’t their run game initially that did the damage. It was J.J. McCarthy finding receivers over the top. Then it was Donovan Edwards sealing the deal with two huge runs to end the game. Michigan radio had the perfect call for the first of those, by the way.
Nicest college football play of Week 13: Cornelius Johnson’s 69-yard TD
Speaking of explosive passing plays, Cornelius Johnson went off with four catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns. The first of those scores had a nice yardage total.
Most disrespectful play of Week 13: Cornelius Johnson’s cut
Johnson was on an absolute tear in the first half against the Buckeyes. As nice as his 69-yard score was, his 75-yard touchdown was the definition of cruel.
Someone check on that safety and his family.
Most improbable result of the day: Oregon State’s comeback over Oregon
Oregon State was dead in the water against Oregon. The Ducks led 31-10. Their place in the Pac-12 Championship Game looked set.
Then…Corvallis happened.
The Beavers flipped the script on the Ducks, taking advantage of Dan Lanning’s questionable analytics play and a dropped punt to launch a comeback for an epic rivalry victory.
CFB catch of the day: Army’s Isaiah Alston
Army produced the best catch we saw in Week 13. That’s right. Army.
Isaiah Alston paired that ridiculous one-handed grab with a broken tackle and romp for 23 yards.
Premature celebration of the day: WVU’s Malachi Ruffin
Defensive backs are notorious for waving their arms in celebration over the smallest things. In this case, Malachi Ruffin was so eager to mark a pass as incomplete that he stopped mid-tackle to do it.
Premature message board meltdown of the day: Georgia Bulldogs
For the first time this season, Georgia allowed a first-quarter touchdown. It was at the hands of rival Georgia Tech and
Cold take of the day: Panel picking Clemson
Clemson was a heavy favorite over South Carolina. The Gamecocks took these predictions personally.
