AC Milan 2-0 Atalanta: Rossoneri take a giant stride towards first Scudetto in 11 years with assured victory at home… leaving Inter needing a win to keep the title race alive as Theo Hernandez scores stunning solo effort

  • Goals from Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez set AC Milan on their way to win
  • Inter Milan will have to avoid dropping points at Cagliari to keep race alive
  • Stefano Pioli’s side have not lost in the league since January, a run of 14 games

AC Milan took a giant stride towards their first Scudetto since the 2010/11 season with an assured victory at home to Atalanta.

Having not lost in the league since January, and with Inter Milan having recently slipped up disastrously away at Bologna, Milan have had the title in their grasp for a number of weeks.

With a few nerves beginning to settle in around the San Siro after Milan went in at the break drawing 0-0 with a resolute Atalanta side, the deadlock was finally broken around 10 minutes into the second period.

Junior Messias’s lofted ball over the top of Atalanta’s high defensive line to set Rafael Leao bearing down on goal bore fruit and the famous old ground could breathe a sigh of relief.

With Atalanta holding their own and at times pinning Milan back, Theo Hernandez stepped up and delivered for Milan.

Picking the ball up on the edge of his own area, Hernandez had options but decided to go himself. Darting past one Atalanta defender, the space began to open up and the Frenchman duly accepted the invitation to simply carry on running.

His athleticism appeared to be something that Atalanta could not deal with and his surge through a vacant midfield saw him swiftly approach the edge of his opposition area.

Cutting back leftwards, he darted across the back three of Marten De Roon, Jose Palomino and Berat Djimsiti before calmly slotting the ball past a helpless Juan Musso.

It could be the goal that decides the destination of this year’s title. It would have a case for being deserving of the title itself.
