The great success of the seventh edition of PhotoVogue Festival

WHAT WOULD SUSAN SONTAG SAY? The contradiction of overexposure, a debate on how the ubiquity of images shapes our ability to feel, was the theme of the seventh edition of PhotoVogue Festival, the first conscious fashion photography festival that focuses on the common ground between ethics and aesthetics. Between 17 and 20 November 2022, around 10,000 people visited the exhibitions and participated in the talks organised at the BASE Milano cultural centre.

With the presence of more than 50 of the artists involved, the programme contained many events including a masterclass by Alfredo Jaar entitled “Teach Us to Outgrow our Madness”, which opened the festival, a talk with the journalist and author David Rieff, panels with Yashica Olden, Yelena Yemchuk, Aïda Muluneh and Roe Ethridge, leading figures in the photography landscape such as Fred Ritchin and Susie Linfield, and with Emanuele Coccia, Maria Luisa Frisa and Vogue’s European Editorial Director, Edward Enninful.

Six exhibitions were presented in the spaces at BASE Milano, some dedicated to social and political subjects, while others also presented conscious fashion photography, with artists who are the drivers of change through images and films that aim to build a more culturally inclusive world.

Regarding the pain of others: presented the most iconic images and footage of catastrophic events in our recent history, without displaying them visually, but instead showing them through their written description. The public was thus invited to mentally visualise the images, a provocation that challenges our role as consumers of photos, to get us to be active and responsible spectators and not passive and distracted voyeurs.

Face Forward: Redefining the Vogue Cover: The most powerful and diverse covers from all the international editions of Vogue featured in an exhibition highlighting the work Vogue has done over the decades to foster a more inclusive representation of beauty.

The next great fashion image makers: the exhibition presented 40 artists from 24 different countries selected by an international jury, the result of the first Global Multimedia Open Call, supported by all editions of Vogue worldwide to identify the most talented creators of fashion images.

Italian Panorama: presented 25 artists from PhotoVogue’s first Local Open Call, dedicated to Italy as a tribute to PhotoVogue’s country of origin, open to all genres – from fashion to documentary, from art to reportage – and to all media, from photography to video, illustration, to 3D art or combinations of any of these disciplines.
