Supermodel-Favorite Swimwear Line Frankies Bikinis Just Launched Recycled Activewear—Shop It Here
“The entire line was made to wear when you please, as you please,” says Francesca Aiello, the Venice, California–based founder of Frankies Bikinis. Today, just ahead of its 10th anniversary, the supermodel-favorite swimwear line launches its first activewear collection. “We refer to it as ‘no rules active,’” says Aiello of capturing the wear-everything-everywhere attitude her designs have come to define.
From the start, though, celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Gigi Hadid, and Jennifer Lopez have been attracted to Aiello’s work. “The first OMG moment I ever had was when Candice Swanepoel posted one of my designs before Frankies Bikinis was even a brand,” Aiello remembers. At the time, she’d created pieces “for fun” Instagram photo ops. “I will never forget how many messages I started getting from people asking how to purchase the swimsuit they saw Candice in,” she says. Once it became clear that the pieces she was creating were being worn as fashion hybrids, something clicked.
“I see so many of our customers wearing our bikini tops as sports bras to work out, and I’ve done the same,” says Aiello of the “major inspiration” for creating 11 new styles (12, if you count the quilted duffel bag) in solid shades of black and blue, plus plumeria-inspired florals that reflect the brand’s natural versatility. The bodywear is cut from quick-dry fabric made of 80% recycled polyester and 20% spandex, so it “just molds to your body and flatters the natural curves.” Wear it running errands, pair it with jeans, roll around the house in its buttery softness.
Basics like high-waist leggings feature vented zips for tactical, stylistic adjustments, while ruched crop tops and ultra-mini tennis skirts capture the brand’s body-forward silhouettes. “You can mix and match everything to create your own look,” says Aiello. “I have always loved the idea of designing pieces that give our customers more bang for their buck.”
Below, Aiello offers Vogue an exclusive first look at each piece of the new collection.
True to its brand DNA, the Billie bralette is a multitasking staple. “This can not only be worn to work out, but also under your favorite tank or sweater,” says Aiello. “The fabric is so comfortable and soft that you can wear it all day.”
“I love that the activewear aesthetic is changing, and people are so open to bringing more fashion-focused pieces into their active wardrobes,” says Aiello of creating statement items like the Felix bodysuit. “The cutout detail gives that extra flair.”
A sweetheart neckline with support. “This top not only pairs well with every bottom offered in the collection but also looks cute with your favorite jeans or sweatpants for everyday comfort,” says Aiello about this functional halter.
As a yoga pant and beyond, this is a classic cut. “Leggings are something that I love when lounging at home, when working out, or when I need to throw on a pair of boots and run an errand,” says Aiello of wearing the Lively legging as “your go-to piece for any and every occasion.”
“This is the piece that I wear most often,” Aiello admits. “I love the high waist and the length that they fall on my thighs.” She channels Princess Di (or Hailey Bieber channeling Princess Di) and pairs them with sweatshirts and sneakers.
Compression is key for Aiello’s cropped silhouettes. “This long-sleeved top offers really great support,” she says. “The wide scoop neckline paired with the supportive halter is a perfect example of merging both fashion and function.”
Aiello describes “flirty pleats” as a Frankies Bikinis signature. “I am obsessed with this tennis dress,” she says. “I love to style it with my favorite sneakers, wrapped with an oversized sweater.”
“The baby tee of my dreams,” says Aiello of the cropped style, whose ultra-supportive fabric holds everything in place. “This is another piece that I love to wear to work out and also like to pair with baggy jeans or sweatpants.”
“One of our most versatile styles, the flare legging can be worn high-waisted, or you can fold the waistband over for a throwback—think Hardtail vibes—look,” Aiello explains. “The flare detail also just gives it the fashion moment our activewear is looking for when we wear it to a workout or running errands.”
“I also had so much fun playing with more out-of-the-box, fashion-focused pieces like our Windy ruched crop top,” says Aiello. A set of adjustable ties allows the wearer to customize their level of reveal.
An ultra-mini power move for the tennis pro. “This is one of my favorite pieces in the collection,” says Aiello, pointing out that the skirt has built-in shorts. “You can pair this style with any top in our line or your favorite T-shirt for that perfect mix of girly, tomboy style.”
