Last Updated: February 22, 2023, 09:25 IST

Indian equity markets extended losses to the fourth trading session on Wednesday, as higher interest rate concerns hurt global sentiments. Today, investors will keenly watch minutes of both the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the US Federal Reserve’s (US Fed) February meeting, in order to discern their policy outlook.

The Sensex was down 263.92 points or 0.43 per cent at 60,408.80, and the Nifty was down 67.70 points or 0.38 per cent at 17,759. About 689 shares have advanced, 1196 shares declined, and 93 shares are unchanged.

Adani Enterprises, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, HCL Tech and Wipro were among major losers on the Nifty, while gainers were Coal India, Britannia, Hindalco, Apollo Hospitals and Tata Steel.

Broader markets, too, were subdued in trade as Nifty MidCap 100 and Nifty SmallCap 100 indices slumped up to 0.3 per cent.

Barring Nifty Metal index, which held marginal gains in a weak market, all other sectors plunged in the sea of red. Nifty IT index was the worst hit as it declined up to 0.9 per cent.

Global Cues

That apart, US markets posted their worst performance in 2023 on Tuesday, as key indices Dow Jones, the S&P 500, and NASDAQ Composite closed over 2 per cent lower.

The dampened mood spread across markets in Asia-Pacific too, this morning, as Nikkei 225, Kospi, Kosdaq, Topix, and the S&P 200 indices fell up to 1 per cent.

Meanwhile, in the commodities basket, prices of Brent Crude and WTI Crude declined up to 0.2 per cent to $82 per barrel, and $76 per barrel, respectively.
