Shabana Azmi says Satish Kaushik wanted to commit suicide after ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ failure – deets inside – Times of India

On Satish Kaushik’s 67th birth anniversary, several friends of the actor gathered under one roof to pay tribute to him. A special musical event was organised by Anupam Kher to celebrate Kaushik’s life. Veteran writer Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Anil Kapoor were among the many who recalled their memories with him.
Shabana got emotional, yet, shared some of the most funny memories with Kaushik because that’s how he would have liked to be remembered. Azmi said during the celebration that, “Once, he walked out of a nursing home with his X-rays in his hand. That is when Shyam Benegal, who had heard from someone that Satish Kaushik is a great actor, called him. He told Satish to bring some of his photos and come to his house. Satish looked at the X-rays and joked, ‘Shyam babu, main X-ray bhej dunga, kyunki andar se main bohot khoobsurat hoon ( I will share my X-rays as well because I am beautiful from the inside).”

The actress further recalled the time when Satish wanted to commit suicide because ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ flopped. She shared, “After the film failed, he was a ‘dukhi aatma’ (sad soul) and he had this feeling that, ‘now I should die.’ He was on the first floor and when he looked down from there, because he was finding ways to commit suicide, there was a party going on. He saw potatoes and brinjals being fried. So, he was like, ‘yaar main aloo baigan ke beech mein agar kud ke marr jaunga toh yeh kharab death hogi (If I fall between potatoes and brinjals and die, it’ll be a bad death)’.” Azmi laughed and got teary eyed at the same time while sharing these hilarious memories.

The actress further shared how close Kaushik was to his daughter Vanshika. She said, “Satish loved his daughter. I was in Budapest and I got a call from him, he was crying and he said, ‘I have got Covid and Vanshika has also got Covid. They are not allowing us to stay together and what will the little girl do alone if she is quarantined. So, do something warna main mar jaaunga (I will die) if they separate me from my daughter.”

Singers like Shankar Mahadevan, Udit Narayan, Sadhna Sargam and Papon performed at the occasion and dedicated songs to Satish Kaushik. Rani Mukerji, Subhash Ghai among others were also present at the event.
