SEN boss Craig Hutchison forced to step in as the feud between Matthew and Andrew Johns escalates

Radio boss forced to step in as the bitter feud between Matthew and Andrew Johns continues to sour… with the latter stepping down for the ‘foreseeable future’ after epic blow-up

  • Brothers had argument over State of Origin
  • Andrew was upset about Queensland praise
  • He has been brushing Matty ever since

The feud between brothers Andrew and Matthew Johns has reached new heights with radio boss Craig Hutchison stepping in to try and resolve the angst.

The brothers were involved in a heated exchange during Matty’s SEN Morning Glory radio show in mid-May and have not been on speaking terms ever since.

Andrew accused his older sibling of showing support for Queensland ahead of the first State of Origin match in Adelaide.

‘Why don’t you put on your Maroon jersey? I’m sure you have some at home. Just because you played four games and lost four doesn’t give you the right to criticise NSW,’ Andrew said.

‘I’m sick of you [pumping up] Queensland. Keep blowing hot air up their a**es.’

The ongoing rivalry between the Johns brothers remains unresolved, with ‘Joey’ once again failing to appear on SEN Radio last Friday, marking the second consecutive week of his absence.

Prior to the show, Matty, the elder brother, expressed uncertainty about whether the former Newcastle Knights premiership-winning captain would fulfill his radio obligations.

‘I’ll simply keep the studio door open,’ he told News Corp

Now an SEN source said Joey had stood himself down ‘for the foreseeable future.’

The tension between Andrew and Matthew has been widely publicised, with media outlets closely following their feud and some – including Test cricket legend Greg Chappell – suggesting the fight is all staged.

‘People think it’s theatre but it’s not,’ said one source close to the Johns brothers.

‘Joey has made it clear that he’s not going back, at least not until after Origin. It’s pretty testy.’

Hutchison has faced numerous conflicts with media personalities in the past and is committed to finding a resolution.

‘We love Joey and we love Matt,’ he said. ‘They’ve been a fantastic part of SEN 1170 on Friday mornings.

‘We respect Joey’s wishes to concentrate on Origin at the moment. We understand he’s got a fair bit on his plate. And I probably underestimated how worked up he is.

‘We look forward to sitting down with him after Origin and welcoming him back with open arms.

‘I’ll get them both together for a bite to eat and go from there.’

While Andrew has remained mute on the feud, Matthew has provided updates including telling fans that calls to his brother in his birthday were not returned.

Matthew has also taken inspiration from comedian Will Ferrell, using his comedic talents to mock and taunt his brother.

Andrew, an NRL Immortal, played the majority of his career for the Newcastle Knights, leading them to two premiership victories and earning numerous accolades, including two Dally M Medals for the league’s best player.

Andrew is widely regarded as one of the greatest rugby league players of all time.

Matthew, his older brother, played as a utility player and had successful stints with the Newcastle Knights and the Cronulla Sharks.

Both are currently enjoying popular stints as media personalities.
