Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has lifted the lid on filming the club’s documentary and enduring a whole new level of stress as the team gained promotion.

The Hollywood actor alongside fellow owner and screen star Rob McElhenney got their Hollywood ending in the most recent season, 2022-23, as their non-league soccer team won the National League title and moved back into the Football League after 15 years away.

The pair broke down in tears as they watched their Welsh side beat Boreham Wood 3-1 to clinch the championship and seal promotion to England’s Tier 4.

The success came after falling short in their first season since taking over fifth-tier side Wrexham in February 2021 following a $2.76million deal.

Reynolds and McElhenney have opened up on their experiences with the club in Variety’s Emmy Extra Edition where they appeared as the cover stars.

‘I don’t think I’ve ever felt anxiety ratcheted up like [at the end of the 2022-23 season]. It wasn’t enjoyable for me,’ Reynolds told the magazine when addressing their recent triumph.

‘It was hell going into the Notts County game this year, actual hell. The fact that the team managed to pull it out in the last second was so perfectly Wrexham.’

The stars witnessed a tense 3-2 win over rivals Notts County at Wrexham’s home, the Racecourse Ground, in April.

The game was locked at 2-2 before Elliot Lee struck in the 78th minute. With Wrexham holding a 3-2 lead former England goalkeeper Ben Foster saved a stoppage-time penalty to spark wild celebrations.

‘Wrexham always finds some way to string out the drama until you’re quite convinced your heart has beat its last beat,’ Reynolds continued.

‘There’s that football expression that Rob taught me: “Squeaky bum time.” I now completely understand squeaky bum time.’

Wrexham sealed promotion 10 days later, sparking more pandemonium. They achieved a history-making 111-point season.

Jubilant supporters immediately invaded the field of play before thousands lined the streets to celebrate the team in an open-top bus parade. Reynolds and McElhenney then treated its stars to an all-expenses-paid four-day trip to Las Vegas.

The club initially shot to international fame through FX’s ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary, going behind the scenes and charting the fortunes of the side following the celebrities’ purchase.

Deadpool actor Reynolds admitted he ‘struggled’ with filming the series to start with.

He disclosed that recording a docuseries was totally different to anything he’d done before.

‘The truth is we didn’t know a f***ing thing when we went in there,’ Reynolds told Variety.

‘I really struggled at the beginning. There’s a moment in the series where I’m joking that I didn’t know that I had the option to not appear on camera all the time.’
