Russia to ‘create safe zone for Indians in East Ukraine’

Moscow is working to create corridors for evacuation of Indians stranded near its border in eastern Ukraine, Russian ambassador-designate to India, Denis Alipov, has said. Russia is in talks with Indian authorities for coordinating safe passage of citizens stranded in eastern Ukraine, he said at his first news conference in New Delhi on Wednesday.

“We are working intensely on creating corridors for securing safe passage for Indian nationals stuck in Kharkiv, Sumy and areas in the northeast of Ukraine so that they can travel and be taken safely to Russian territories. We are in touch with Indian authorities too,” Alipov said. “The corridor will be in place as soon as possible; hopefully, in the very near future and Indian nationals will be safe in Russian territory,” Alipov told ET. He said Moscow will probe the death of Naveen Shekharappa Gyandagoudar killed in the Russian shelling of Kharkiv.

Alipov had met foreign secretary Harsh V Shringla twice since Sunday, after his arrival in India last week. He expressed sympathy for the family of Gyandagoudar and India. “We are strategic allies with India. We are grateful to India for its balanced position displayed at the UN. India understands the depth of the crisis,” Alipov said when asked about India’s position on the current crisis. India and Russia are coordinating on the issue, he said.

“We do coordinate our positions. At the UN, we inform India about our approach. We do the utmost and everything possible to keep India up to date as regards to what is happening,” he said. It is rare for an ambassador designate to conduct a presser.
