The NRL top eight hopes of the Roosters are hanging by a thread after star five-eighth Luke Keary suffered a suspected broken jaw on Saturday.

Keary, 31, left the field in the 25th minute against the Knights, heading straight up the tunnel at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Vision revealed the playmaker picked up the injury when attempting to make a cover tackle on Newcastle winger Dom Young.

Fox League’s Lara Pitt revealed the worst fears for Keary and the Tricolours, who have been disappointing in 2023 given their star-studded roster.

He is tipped to be sidelined for a minimum of four weeks, with scans to determine the severity of the injury.

Keary, a premiership winner with the Chooks in 2018 and 2019, has endured a shocking run of concussions over the past few years.

He was previously concussed five times in the space of 14 months between January 2018 and May 2019, including one which similarly left him with recurring headaches for weeks.

It was suggested by some reporters at the time Keary should be medically retired, but the veteran opted to soldier on.

Keary made his NRL debut with the Rabbitohs in 2013, winning a premiership the following season. 

He jumped ship to Moore Park in 2017 following a disagreement with South Sydney co-owner Russell Crowe.
