Retail inflation drops marginally, but rules over RBI comfort band

Retail inflation dropped marginally to 7.01 per cent in June 7.04 per cent in May mainly due to slight easing in food prices. The inflation rate was at a higher 7.09 per cent in rural areas and 6.92 per cent in urban areas. The overall inflation rate was 6.26 per cent in June last year.

The rate of increase of inflation may be lower in June but prices continued to pinch the pocket. With 2021 as 100, the general index for all groups rose from 172.5 in May to 173.6 in June.

Food Inflation in June was 7.75 per cent as compared to 7.97 per cent in May. Here rural inflation was lower at 7.61 per cent in June as compared to 8.04 per cent in urban areas, according to the National Statistical Office (NSO) data released on Tuesday. Out of 12 sub-groups contained in the ‘Food and Beverages’ group, the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) is based on 10 sub-groups, excluding ‘Non-alcoholic beverages’ and ‘Prepared meals, snacks, sweets etc.’.

With 2021 as 100, declines were noticed in only three major segments: Oils and fats segment fell from 209.9 to 208.1, Pulses and products from 165.0 to 164.7 and Transport and communication from 167.1 to 165.5.

Indicating supply chain problems, prices rose the most in peripheral states such as J&K and Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Lakshadweep and Sikkim. While the index was over 180 in these states, north Indian states recorded low increases. The index was 163.8 in Himachal Pradesh, 167.2 in Haryana, 162 in Delhi and 165.4 in Punjab.
