Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), whose support guided him back to the Indian cricket team just in time for the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2023. After recovering from a challenging back injury, Shreyas Iyer found himself named in the 17-member squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on a recent Monday. The much-anticipated Asia Cup, set to commence on August 30, will mark the return of eminent players like Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer, while also providing an opportunity for Tilak Verma to shine on the team.
In a heartwarming Instagram post, Shreyas Iyer extended his gratitude to the unsung heroes behind his triumphant comeback. The return of Shreyas Iyer to the national squad is a source of immense optimism for the Men in Blue. The team is counting on him, along with KL Rahul, to provide stability to the middle order, which had been managed by players like Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Axar Patel, and Sanju Samson during their absence. Iyer’s role will primarily focus on securing the number four position, a task he has excelled at in the past.
Shreyas Iyer boasts an impressive record at the number four spot, having amassed 805 runs from 20 innings at an average of 47.35 and a strike rate of 94.37. His exceptional performance includes two centuries and five half-centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 113.
Notably, Shreyas Iyer dominated as the leading run-scorer across all formats in the previous year. He concluded the year with an impressive tally of 1,609 international runs from 39 matches and 40 innings, maintaining an average of 48.75. Within this span, he registered one century and an impressive 14 half-centuries, with a personal best of 113*.
His excellence was not confined to a specific format. In five Test matches, Shreyas Iyer accumulated 422 runs from eight innings, with an average of 60.28 and four half-centuries. His standout performance was highlighted by a top Test score of 92.
In the One Day International (ODI) format, Shreyas Iyer shone brightly with 724 runs from 17 matches at an average of 55.69.
Continuing his prowess, Shreyas Iyer excelled in T20Is, amassing 463 runs at an average of 35.61 and an impressive strike rate of 141.15. Within this format, he achieved four half-centuries, with his best score of 74*.
