Report: Trent Jr., Raptors working towards multi-year extension

Shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. and the Toronto Raptors are reportedly working towards a multi-year extension, according to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes

Trent Jr., 24, opted in to his $18.5 million player option on June 20, choosing to stay with Toronto another year before perhaps testing the free agent market.

He joined the Raptors at the 2021 trade deadline in a deal that sent Norman Powell to the Portland Trail Blazers. He then signed a three-year, $51.8 million contract that included the player option following the 2021 season.

The guard will be entering his sixth year in the league and is eligible for a four-year extension worth $113.6 million. He’s represented by Klutch Sports agent Lucas Newton.

Former teammate Fred VanVleet, who is also represented by Klutch, signed a max contract with the Houston Rockets earlier on Friday, leaving a hole in the Toronto backcourt. The Raptors have since signed Dennis Schroder.

Trent Jr. was one of the better shooters for the Raptors last season, knocking down 36.9 per cent of his looks from beyond the arc. He averaged 17.4 points and 1.6 steals per game last season.
