Report: Owner of Capitals, Wizards exploring move out of downtown D.C.

Monumental Sports & Entertainment, owner of the Washington Capitals, Wizards and Mystics, has explored moving the teams from downtown D.C. to nearby Virginia, the Washington Post reported Saturday.

The Post reported that Monumental, which is headed by Ted Leonsis, is looking into a site in northern Virginia not far from a new Amazon headquarters.

The Post cited two sources, one from Monumental, as stating the talks were preliminary and exploratory.

It’s been a busy week for Monumental. On Thursday, the Associated Press and Sportico reported that Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund is buying a roughly 5 per cent stake in Monumental as part of a $4.05-billion deal.

On Wednesday, NBC Sports Washington, purchased a year ago by Leonsis’ company, was rebranded Monumental Sports Network.
