Report: NBA investigating Hawks’ Dejounte Murray for bumping referee

The NBA is reportedly opening an investigation into the actions Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray directed to officials at the end of Game 4 Sunday against the Boston Celtics, according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.

Following the Hawks’ 129-121 loss, Murray appeared to confront Gediminas Petraitis, one of the officials, while leaving the court.

The seventh-year guard bumped his chest into the referee’s right shoulder and stared directly at the ref whilst doing so. He continued to stare Petraitis down while walking towards the tunnel.

He also appears to say something to Petraitis, though sound from the incident is still unavailable.

After the bump, Murray pointed to the opposite stands while shouting and had to be held back by a Hawks player and staff member.

Murray didn’t speak at the post-game availabilities.

If the NBA deems the bump to be intentional, Murray could face a suspension. Though not much precedent is available for this sort of incident, Rajon Rondo, while on the Celtics, was suspended for a game in 2012 after bumping an official during a playoff series against the Hawks.

Murray has averaged 25.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.7 assists in four games this series.

After their loss to the Celtics on Sunday, the Hawks are down 3-1 in their first-round series and are set to head to Boston for Game 5 on Tuesday.
