Earlier this month, allegations emerged connecting Hall of Famer Brett Favre to a statewide welfare scheme in Mississippi.
In the latest twist, more unflattering reports about Favre’s alleged unethical and possibly illegal behavior have come to light.
According to The Athletic’s Katie Strang and Kalyn Kahler, while Favre and others worked together to channel millions of state welfare funds into the University of Southern Mississippi’s Athletic Foundation, the former Green Bay Packers great was also diverting money from his own charity.
Per the report, from 2018 to 2020, Favre’s charity, Favre 4 Hope, donated more than $130,000 to USM athletics.
Founded by Favre and his wife, Deanna Favre, in 1995, the foundation provides “financial assistance” to services for disadvantaged youth and cancer patients in Mississippi and Wisconsin.
News of Favre’s links to the welfare scandal in Mississippi first broke on September 1.
In 2017 and 2018, the state of Mississippi reportedly used more than $1.1 million of federal welfare money to pay Favre for a series of speeches he never delivered. Favre claims he returned the initial fees but has not repaid the $228,000 in interest demanded by Mississippi’s state auditor.
Text messages between Favre and then-Mississippi governor Phil Bryant entered into a civil lawsuit showed the two conspired to move $5 million of the state’s welfare money to help build a volleyball complex at USM, where Favre’s daughter played at the time.
Favre has not been charged with a crime and has since denied knowingly receiving welfare funds in the alleged scheme.
