Rangers hero McCoist launches into fierce defence of Gilmour as he delivers England ‘binmen’ jibe

RANGERS hero Ally McCoist launched into a fierce defence of Scotland international Billy Gilmour after the midfielder was slated by Norwich City fans.

The Chelsea starlet was jeered by Canaries fans who sang “f*** off back to Chelsea” as he played for the club in the loss to Crystal Palace.

McCoist had revealed he was never sure of Gilmour’s move to Norwich due to contrasting play styles and today defended the midfielder in response to a critical fan.

talkSPORT caller Joe said: “It’s not so much his performances that have caused him to get the stick, especially yesterday.

“It’s more the backlash we get from the Chelsea support on social media, reviews from people such as yourselves who say, ‘he’s brilliant, he performs well for Scotland against binmen against the Faroe Islands. He’s not putting in those performances for us.”

Chelsea and Scotland fans alike have been shocked by the criticism with Gilmour largely viewed as a major talent and consistent player for Norwich this season – even if Canaries fans don’t agree.

Host Alan Brazil was quick to slam the caller’s ‘binmen’ comments as he recalled Gilmour’s man-of-the-match performance against England at Euro 2020.

Brazil hit back: “Joe, with the greatest of respect, most of the Faroe people are whalers, thatchers. They’re not binmen, mate. And did young Billy not have a cracking game against England, Ally?”

And McCoist felt similarly to Brazil as he too slated the comments and directed a light-hearted ‘binmen’ jibe back at the England squad.

He added: “Well, that’s what I said, they cut me off there. If they had that link on any longer that’s exactly what I said.

“My next statement was I thought he did all right against the binmen from England.

“However, have you ever heard anything more silly in your life, Al?

“Joe’s come on and said the Norwich fans are giving Billy Gilmour stick because of the Chelsea fans and what other people are writing.

“So that’s why he thinks it’s a good idea to give Billy Gilmour stick. You couldn’t make it up; he’s said ‘any chance of survival’? I tell you, Joe: if you want any chance of survival, it’s not turning on your own team.”
