RacingNSW boss Peter V’landys to run race honouring King Charles at Everest Spring Racing carnival

The richest race on turf gets even richer! Sporting supremo Peter V’landys snares huge coup – with race in honour of King Charles set to appear alongside the $20million Everest

  •  Spring carnival has a new $5m race
  •  Race named in honour of King Charles III
  •  The Everest’s prizemoney increases to $20m

Sydney’s spring carnival has a new $5m race named in honour of King Charles III, while an increase in prizemoney makes The Everest the world’s richest sprint race.

The inaugural King Charles III Stakes carrying prizemoney of $5 million will be run on Saturday 14 October 2023 at Royal Randwick alongside The TAB Everest during the Sydney spring carnival.

The prizemoney for TAB Everest has now been lifted to an eye-watering $20m – making it the richest race on turf.

The Everest meeting will now have a total prizemoney of nearly $35m spread across the 10 races.

Racing NSW boss Peter V’landys met with King Charles III at Royal Ascot last week to get approval to name the new race in Sydney after His Majesty.

‘I have never met a person that had such a passion for racing as the late Queen Elizabeth II,’ V’landys said.

‘Her knowledge was breathtaking.’

‘The King is new to racing and was very chuffed we named a feature race on Everest day after him. I think eventually he will love racing as much as his mum.’

Racing NSW Chairman Russell Balding said, ‘The King Charles III Stakes creates a new level of excitement for the Sydney Everest Carnival, with a feature open age mile race boosting an already mouth-watering Everest Day meeting.’

‘It is also befitting for Royal Randwick to have a feature race in Spring named in honour of His Majesty, to compliment the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in Autumn, with Royal Randwick being Australia’s only Royal Racecourse.’

Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris said that racing makes a significant contribution to the NSW economy.

‘Last year, more than 46,000 people attended The Everest at Royal Randwick and spent money at restaurants, pubs and hotels across the city,’ Mr Harris said.

‘The increased prizemoney for The Everest and the addition of the King Charles III race will create an even bigger and better event this year, with positive flow on effects for the 50,000 people directly and indirectly employed in the NSW racing industry.’

Mr Balding announced that with the increase in prizemoney, The TAB Everest is now the second richest race in the world, behind the the $28m Saudi Cup.

‘This further increase in prizemoney is not only recognition of The TAB Everest as being the highest rated race in Australia, but also of the success this event has created in flow on benefits throughout the entire NSW Thoroughbred Industry for the whole of the year,’ he said.

‘Since its inaugural running in 2017, The TAB Everest has consistently rated as the highest or equal highest sprint race in the world.’
