This was the first time a perfect game has been pitched at the WBC. The closest the competition has come was a no-hitter thrown in the inaugural 2006 tournament when then-18-year-old Shairon Martis of the Netherlands threw the first and only no-no.
The game was declared over after the eighth inning when Enrique Hernandez hit a walk-off single to end the game. Matches played in the group stage of the WBC have a 10-run mercy rule in place.

Jose De Leon, who spent time in the Blue Jays minor league system last season but now plays for the Minnesota Twins, started the game for Puerto Rico. He threw 5 2/3 innings striking out 10, tying a WBC record.
His final out was a strikeout on Blue Jays prospect Spencer Horwitz.
Next up was Yacksel Rios who is currently pitching for the Atlanta Braves. He only faced one batter but came up big, striking him out to close the sixth inning.
Then came the sound of trumpets, as New York Mets star closer Edwin Diaz took the mound to secure another three-up three-down inning, tacking on a strikeout as well.
Last was Duane Underwood Jr. of the Pittsburgh Pirates, closing out the game in what would be the last inning needed for the historical feat.
On the offensive end, Puerto Rico was fuelled more than productive. Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez went two-for-three, smacking two doubles with two RBIs. New York Mets superstar Francisco Lindor hit a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the fifth.
After this win, Puerto Rico sits at 2-1 in the tournament. They’ll take on the powerhouse Dominican Republic on Wednesday in their final game of the group stage.
Israel meanwhile falls to 1-1 on the tournament. Their next game is on Tuesday where they’ll also matchup against the Dominican Republic.
