Protesting wrestlers on Haryana, Punjab tour to garner support for May 28 Mahapanchayat | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Protesting wrestlers, led by Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, intensified their efforts on Thursday to gather support in their fight against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers embarked on tours across different parts of North India as they sought backing for the planned women’s Mahapanchayat, scheduled for May 28.
Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat visited Jind in Haryana, while Sakshi Malik, the bronze medallist from the Rio Olympics, and her husband Satyawart Kadian reached Punjab. They sought support from women’s organisations and urged them to participate in large numbers in the women’s panchayat, which will be held near the new Parliament building on the day of its inauguration.
Meanwhile, wrestler Sangeeta Phogat, who is currently stationed at Jantar Mantar, stated that the wrestlers are touring different areas and engaging with khap leaders to strategize their future course of action.
“Vinesh and Bajrang are meeting khap leaders in Jind, and Sakshi and Satyawart are in Punjab to seek more support for our Maha Panchayat on May 28,” Sangeeta Phogat informed PTI.
“We are determined to hold the panchayat near the new Parliament building if our demand for the arrest of Brij Bhushan is not met.”
The protest by the top wrestlers of the country at Jantar Mantar has been ongoing for over a month. They are demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan, whom they have accused of sexual harassment of seven women wrestlers, including a minor.
During their protest, the wrestlers visited various locations in the national capital, including Bangla Sahib Gurudwara and Rajghat, to garner support for their movement. On May 23, they organised a candlelight march to mark the completion of one month of their agitation.
