‘Pink Chai’ Or ‘Kashmiri Noon Chai’: Video From Lucknow Divides Internet (Watch)

Let’s agree, today social media has become part and parcel of our everyday life. From finding recipes to looking for easy hacks – it helps with every possible thing one can think of. That’s not all. Social media also brings us closer to the world. From world news to interesting viral videos and more. Take food trail videos for instance. We find vloggers travelling world-wide and sharing videos of unique foods from different regions. One such video we recently came across was of a unique street food from Lucknow. While Lucknow is known for its biryani and galouti kebab, the city also offers various other foods and drinks that are still unexplored by many. One such drink is the ‘pink chai’ from Lucknow.

Food blogging channel on Instagram – yumyumindia – recently shared a short video that featured a man selling ‘pink chai’ near the famous Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow. In the video, we could see the seller breaking fan puffs in a cup, then adding a dollop of butter to it. And finally, he adds pink coloured tea to it and serves. Take a look:

Looks delicious; isn’t it? But it seems the name ‘pink chai’ didn’t go well with several people on the photo-sharing app. According to them, it’s the popular noon chai from Kashmir, not ‘pink chai’. However, some also stated that it is not noon chai because the authentic noon chai doesn’t have such bright pink colour. The video has garnered more than 11 million views and thousands of comments.

“It’s Noon Chaii Not Pink Chai!” wrote one. Another person reacted, “Not Noon Chai!!! Noon chai only in Kashmir valley made with salt and not this bright weird colour!!” A third person commented, “What??? Pink Tea??”

“Looking so delicious just by looking at the colour of the tea. I thought they mixed roohafza because usually when we mix roohafza in milk the colour come after is pink,” a person commented.

For the unversed, noon chai, also referred to as gulabi chai and shir chai, is a traditional beverage in the Kashmir valley. Traditionally, noon chai is prepared with Kashmiri green tea, milk, baking soda and a pinch of salt. Click here for the recipe.
