PhonePe launches green data centre with Dell Technologies and NTT

Dell Technologies and NTT have built a green data centre for fintech major PhonePe using liquid immersion technology – a first in India.

This is also PhonePe’s first green data centre in India which will help the fintech reduce its carbon emissions and meet sustainability goals, said the company.

This 4.8-megawatt facility, which occupies 13,740 sqft at Mahape, Navi Mumbai, is built and designed with advanced alternative cooling technologies like Direct Contact Liquid Cooling (DCLC) and Liquid Immersion Cooling (LIC).

“This is the first data centre we’re bringing into the country based on the liquid immersion technology,” said Manish Gupta, vice president of Infrastructure Solutions Group at Dell Technologies India, adding this is the latest and best technology for green data centres.

The power usage effectiveness (PUE) – a metric used to determine the energy efficiency of a data centre – for the Navi Mumbai facility is expected to be 1.27, as compared to the industry standard of 1.6 for air-cooled data centres, resulting in a power saving of about 1.58 MW.

“When we thought about reducing our carbon footprint, we thought about what drives the digital transactions, and the primary asset is our data centres, and power efficiency is the singular metric you chase,” said Rahul Chari, cofounder of PhonePe. “We are going to see a significant amount of power savings, and therefore relative reduction of carbon footprint. Scaling this further would exponentially improve those gains.”

Gupta said Dell was currently in talks with other companies to set up similar facilities in India.

“This deployment is an exciting showcase for the possibilities of new alternative cooling technologies that can help optimise power consumption in a data centre. For us, this is another step in building a connected future sustainably and responsibly,” said Sharad Sanghi, managing director of NTT Ltd. India.
