The San Diego Padres made a huge trade at the deadline, but it hasn’t been enough to help them secure a spot in the playoffs. After landing the most sought-after player and 2022 Home Run Derby champion, Juan Soto, the Padres have only won one game with him.
Despite trading for one of the best hitters in all of baseball, San Diego hasn’t scored in 23 innings.
The Pads are in for a rude awakening if they miss the bare minimum of their expectations.
Padres missing the playoffs this season would be a huge choke
San Diego gave up several top prospects and young players in a trade package big enough for the Washington Nationals to deal away their best player. To put Soto’s worth in perspective, the Nationals offered the 23-year-old a 15-year $440 million extension, which would’ve been the largest contract in MLB history.
The Padres completed a historic trade, so if they don’t make the playoffs, it’ll be a huge disappointment. On the track they’re currently on, that’s no guarantee.
According to FanGraphs, San Diego has an 83.4 percent chance of making the playoffs. Though the likelihood is still higher than most teams, it’s decreased since the deadline. The day before the deadline, their playoff odds were at 84.8 percent. After all trades were complete, that increased to 95.9.
The return of Fernando Tatis Jr. is likely to help the lineup, but if the Padres still miss the playoffs with both sluggers, heads will roll in San Diego.
