ODI World Cup 2023 Points Table: Updated standings after South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 102 runs

The 13th edition of the quadrennial event began on October 5 with a clash between defending champions England and finalists New Zealand.

South Africa made history on Saturday by achieving the highest ever World Cup total of 428 runs, resulting in a remarkable 102-run victory over Sri Lanka. Aiden Markram played a pivotal role in this triumph, smashing the fastest century of the tournament in just 49 balls. This outstanding performance surpassed the previous World Cup record of 417 runs set by Australia against Afghanistan in 2015.

Furthermore, South Africa’s score of 428-5 also ranks as the ninth highest total in all one-day internationals. Markram’s exceptional innings of 106 runs not only secured the victory but also broke the previous record for the fastest World Cup century, previously held by Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien, who achieved it in 50 balls against England in 2011.

Markram’s first 50 runs were scored in just 34 balls, and he impressively added the next 50 runs in a mere 15 deliveries.

This triumph propelled South Africa to the second position in the ten-team table, solidifying their standing in the tournament.

Here is the updated World Cup 2023 points table:

Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock both scored centuries in the first World Cup match, marking a historic moment with three tons in the same innings. The batting prowess of Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, and skipper Dasun Shanaka was evident as they all hit half-centuries. However, Sri Lanka’s response was always going to be focused on minimizing the damage.

Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, the statistics painted a bleak picture, with two of their bowlers, Matheesha Pathirana and Kasun Rajitha, conceding over 180 runs in just 20 overs.

De Kock, who is participating in his last international tournament, achieved his 18th ODI century off 83 balls, showcasing his prowess with 12 fours and three sixes.
