Nusrat Jahan on Leena Manimekalai’s Goddess Kaali poster: Religious sentiments shouldn’t be hurt – Times of India

It’s been two years since Nusrat Jahan faced brutal personal attacks on social media and even received death threats for allegedly hurting religious sentiments when she dressed as Maa Durga for a special photoshoot. Back then, the actor-politician faced uproar for appearing as a Hindu Gossess while being a Muslim, especially from the Islamic groups.

And now, addressing the media during a panel discussion, Nusrat opened up on the recent controversy of a documentary film poster showing a woman dressed in a costume portraying Goddess Kaali and smoking. While speaking on her 2020 controversy, she insisted that she has never hurt religious sentiments and it has never been her intention.

When commenting on the Goddess Kaali poster controversy that kicked up a social media storm she requested all not to pull religion in the name of creativity while making it saleable. Nusrat further said that she has always backed creativity and individuality. But at the same time, she also believes religious sentiments can’t be hurt. If someone is making a public display of his or her creative works that person has to take responsibility for his/her own actions. The ‘Dictionary’ actor also made it clear that she will never hurt religious sentiments or mix creativity and religion.

For the unversed, the latest controversy kicked up when filmmaker Leena Manimekalai shared the poster of her documentary wherein a woman appearing as Goddess Kali can be seen smoking. The film was part of the ‘Rhythms of Cananda’ segment at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. A police complaint has already been filed against the filmmaker for hurting religious sentiments. As netizens took a dig at the poster, the hashtag #ArrestLeenaManimekal trended big time on Twitter.
