Nats catcher suffers injury that no one would wish on their worst enemy

Washington Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz was pulled from the game against the St. Louis Cardinals and transferred to a hospital with a nasty injury.

The Washington Nationals are looking to play spoiler after being the first team in the NL to be eliminated from postseason contention. But during the team’s game on Sept. 8 against the St. Louis Cardinals, one of their players picked up a concerning injury. An injury that is painful just by reading it.

Catcher Keibert Ruiz was hit in the groin by a foul ball hit by Cardinals rookie outfielder Ben DeLuzio during an at-bat in the second inning.  Ruiz had slammed his catcher’s mask onto the ground afterwards as he was checked on by the team. He was ultimately replaced by Riley Adams in the sixth inning.

After the game, it was revealed that Ruiz was taken to the hospital due to swelling of the testicles. Manager Davey Martinez revealed that they were holding a bus for Ruiz to travel to Philadelphia for their weekend series against the Phillies.

Prior to his exit, Ruiz was 1-for-3 at the plate. The Nationals picked up the 11-6 victory over the Cardinals.

On the season, Ruiz recorded a .251 batting average, a .313 on-base percentage, a .360 slugging percentage, seven home runs, 36 RBI, and 99 hits in 112 games.

Ruiz’s status will be worth monitoring, especially to see if he will be able to play in any of Washington’s three games against Philadelphia. Here is hoping that he will be good to play for the team soon.
