Monsoon seen progressing further over next 2 days: IMD

New Delhi: Southwest monsoon will likely advance into remaining parts of Kerala and some more parts of the southern peninsula over the next two days, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

The monsoon current is expected to progress into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and some more parts of southwest, central and northeast Bay of Bengal and remaining parts of Kerala in the next 24 hours, and northeastern states and some parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during subsequent two days.

The southwest monsoon hit Kerala on Thursday, seven days behind schedule. Monsoon rains typically arrive at India’s mainland by 1 June. The onset has not been delayed beyond 8 June at least in the past 20 years.

Meanwhile, very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy over east-central Arabian Sea slowly moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 6 kmph in past six hours and lay centered there. It would intensify gradually over the next 36 hours and move nearly north-northeastwards in the next two days and north-northwestwards during the subsequent three days, the weather bureau said.

In view of the weather system, IMD has advised suspending fishing operations over east-central and adjoining west-central Arabian Sea, with fishermen asked not to venture into the central Arabian Sea till 13 June and north Arabian Sea until 16 June.

Those who are out at sea have been asked to return to the coast.

Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over eastcentral Bay of Bengal off Myanmar coast, a low pressure area has formed over northeast Bay of Bengal today, which is likely to become a well marked low pressure area in the next 24 hours. This may cause light-to-heavy rainfall across northeast, south, and eastern parts of India during Friday to Tuesday, IMD informed.

The weather department has forecast severe heat wave conditions in some pockets in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh from Friday to Sunday, over Gangetic West Bengal till Tuesday, in Odisha and Jharkhand till Monday.

Heat wave conditions are also expected over Andhra Pradesh on Friday and Saturday, and in Tamil Nadu today.
