Miami’s Cavinder twins reveal they played on through ‘family health problems’ during March Madness

TikTok sensations, the Cavinder twins, revealed a member of their family suffered personal health problems during their March Madness run to the Elite Eight with the University of Miami. 

Miami’s Cinderella run came to an end Sunday night as they were downed 54-42 by No. 3 seed LSU but the team’s stint was impressive, having picked off No/ 4 seed Villanova, No. 1 seed Indiana and No. 8 seed Oklahoma State in previous rounds.

The 22-year-old Cavinder twins, Haley and Hanna, who have a social media following that surpasses that of most professional sports organizations’ – with 4.5million followers on TikTok – ‘vlogged’ (video-blogged) their journey through the tournament for their fans. 

And while releasing the first part of their March Madness vlog, which came after Miami’s wins over the Cowboys and Hoosiers, the twins revealed they had battled on despite a family member leaving the NCAA tournament due to health problems.

A day after Miami’s 62-61 win over Oklahoma, which ensured the Hurricanes’ spot in the tournament’s Round of 32, Haley filmed herself talking to the camera, revealing that while she and her sister were happy to have won, the result was bittersweet.

‘We got the dub, so we’re in the round of 32,’ Haley said. ‘It was really good. We had some family issues occur, so one of my people had to go back to Michigan. I’m not gonna get into all that, I like to keep myself offline but that’s why my mood isn’t really up. But today is Sunday, so we just have to prepare for Indiana.’ 

Following Miami’s major upset over Indiana, Hanna claimed the win was extra special as their family member had seemingly recovered. 

‘That was crazy, that game was insane,’ said Hanna. ‘Especially playing in Indiana, in front of their fans. I just can’t believe we’re going to Sweet 16. 

‘This video was kind of hard to film. I know Haley mentioned personal health problems within our family and it was hard, our emotions were everywhere but everything is good now. Solidifying that win was the cherry on top.’

Miami would go on to beat Vilanova, 70-65, in the Sweet 16, before falling to LSU in the Elite Eight (42-54) on Sunday.

From the start of the Hurricanes’ fairytale run at the NCAA tournament, however, Hanna and Haley managed to include snippets of their family for their fans, first at a dinner in between relatives, which took place prior to the twins’ game against Oklahoma State — Miami’s first March Madness game.

‘Hannah and I are up we’re gonna get some oatmeal in us,’ Haley said in her vlog. ‘We get taped. We leave in like 45 minutes so getting our bodies moving. 

‘But yeah, you guys saw our family again. We’re so excited to have them here. Uhm, [we’re] gonna hang out with them for a little bit and see them so it’s gonna be a great day and we play at 2 against Oklahoma State, so let’s get it.’

Prior to the girls’ game against Indiana in the second round, the two sisters can be seen hanging out at a bar with their father, while warming up to the Indiana cold. 

‘Dad’s wearing a Miami hat…dad how are you feeling?’ Haley asked before her father winked at her without uttering a word back, signalling that he’s fine and taking things easy.

 The twins’ family is shown once again in the vlog when Haley shares highlights of her 9-point performance against the Hoosiers.

After drilling both of her free throws with just 12.7 seconds left in regulation and the score at 68-65, in favor of the Hurricanes, Haley rushes over to the stands with her sister to celebrate her team’s qualification for the Sweet 16 of March Madness.

‘I’m crying,’ she wrote as a caption for a Snapchat video showing the moment when she and Hanna are both hugged by the onlooking father after the 70-68 win. 

It remains unclear who exactly among the Cavinder sisters’ family was dealing with personal health issues.
