Melbourne Demons star suffers injury scare one week out from grand final

Seven days out from the highly-anticipated grand final, one of Melbourne’s best young talents went down with a worrying injury scare.

Melbourne Demons fans were left holding their breath after Charlie Spargo suffered an injury scare one week out from the highly-anticipated AFL grand final.

The talented small forward twisted his left ankle during a tackling drill at Perth’s Mineral Resources Park on Saturday evening, and was assessed by trainers off the field.

The 21-year-old took no further part in the session and was later spotted limping with ice on his ankle.

However, the Demons claimed Spargo had jarred his ankle and was not in doubt for the season finale against the Western Bulldogs.

Spargo has kicked 17 goals for Melbourne this season, contributing on average 11.67 disposals per match.

He has played every game of the season to date, and booted two majors in last weekend’s thumping victory over the Geelong Cats.

Meanwhile, the Demons remain adamant star defender Steven May will be fit to play in Saturday’s grand final, which is scheduled to get underway at 7.15pm AEST.

The All-Australian has been recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained during the preliminary final in Perth.

“He’s slowly building his program up towards his full training come the back end of next week,” Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said before the training session.

“He’s in really good shape, really positive about where that sits with him and he’s really confident in the way his body’s tracking.

“Today’s just a stepping stone in that process and we’re really confident he’ll be right to play.”
