Mehmood’s sister Minoo Mumtaz passes away in Canada – Times of India

Minoo Mumtaz aka Malikunnisa Ali passed away today in Toronto in Canada where she lived with her husband Sayyed Ali Akbar, son, and three daughters. The actress had been diagnosed with cancer a few days ago, which deteriorated quickly leading to her demise today.

Confirming the news, her nephew Naushad says, “Since she was old, 80 plus, there wasn’t much to be done. She was one of the loveliest people I had ever met”. Her younger brother Anwar Ali, who is also a part of films and now a producer, wrote, “Regret to inform that my loving sister Minoo Mumtaz, passed away (in Canada) a few minutes ago… Deep gratitude to the film fraternity, press, media, fans, friends, for decades of love and adulation showered upon her”.

Sister of ace comedian Mehmood Ali, Malikunnisa was renamed Minoo by the inimitable Meena Kumari, who was Mehmood’s sister-in-law. Minoo had appeared in several Hindi films, mostly in character actor roles or as a dancer in songs. Minoo, one of the four daughters and four sons born to Mumtaz Ali (a dancer and character artiste in films in the 1940s), followed in her elder brother Mehmood’s footsteps into the industry.

Having made her debut with ‘Sakhi Hateem’, she went on to play the lead opposite Balraj Sahni in ‘Black Cat’. She has been part of films like ‘C.I.D.’, ‘Howra Bridge’, ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’, ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chand’, ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’, ‘Taj Mahal’, ‘Ghoonghat’, ‘Insan Jaag Utha’, ‘Ghar Basake Dekho’, ‘Gazal’, ‘Sindbad’, ‘Alibaba’, ‘Aladin’, ‘Dharmaputra’, ‘Jahanaara’.
