Manipur CM Biren Singh meets Amit Shah in Delhi

Guwahati | New Delhi: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh met Union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday, a day after Shah chaired an all-party meeting on the prevailing situation in the state.

Singh briefed the home minister “about the evolving situation on the ground” and said that there has been no report of casualties since June 13 due to the violence. He said that the state and central governments have been able to control the violence to a “great extent”.

This is Singh’s second visit to the national capital after Manipur witnessed unprecedented violence since May 3. After the meeting, Singh said in a tweet: “Called on Union home minister Amit Shahji in New Delhi today and briefed about the evolving situation on the ground in Manipur. Under Amit Shahji’s close supervision, the state and central govts have been able to control the violence to a great extent in the past week. It may be noted that there has been no report of casualties due to the violence since the 13th of June.”

He added: “Hon’ble Union HM has assured that the central government will take all possible steps to bring normalcy in Manipur. Further, Amit Shahji advised us to strengthen our work towards achieving everlasting peace and also sought the cooperation of every stakeholder in Manipur to ensure that peace prevails in the state.”

He was joined by BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra, Speaker Satyabrata Singh. With tension still simmering in the state, the BJP leadership is treading cautiously. Although the demands for a leadership change are getting louder, the party leadership has not yet decided on the matter.

During the all-party meeting on Saturday, almost all political parties demanded resignation of Biren Singh.Unfazed by the demands of his resignation, Biren Singh told media persons in Imphal: “It is natural for Opposition parties to demand resignation when something happens, good or bad. At present, the focus is to restore normalcy and bring peace.”He added that the government was “engaging with stakeholders, church leaders in the hills. From Monday onwards, talks will start with civil society groups, Meira Paibi (women group) and religious leaders to bring normalcy and peace”.
