Manchester United executive ‘STUNNED’ the club ‘haven’t tried everything’ to appoint Michael Edwards

Senior Manchester United executive ‘STUNNED’ that the club ‘haven’t tried everything’ to bring former Liverpool director Michael Edwards to Old Trafford… with the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea and PSG keen on the transfer guru

  • Michael Edwards is wanted by Europe’s top clubs after leaving Liverpool
  • Liverpool’s former sporting director had been influential for the Reds since 2016
  • Manchester United are one club who have been linked with a move for Edwards

A Manchester United executive is reportedly ‘stunned’ that the club haven’t done everything they can to bring former Liverpool transfer guru Michael Edwards to Old Trafford.

The Mirror have claimed that the unnamed chief has been left bemused by the club’s decision to not and try and recruit Liverpool’s former director, who was hailed as ‘instrumental’ in masterminding some of Jurgen Klopp’s greatest signings.

United are said to be plotting an entire restructure of their hierarchy as they look to bring the club back to its former glory, after suffering their worst Premier League season in history.

Edwards excelled at strategically offloading players for sensational fees – squeezing £142million out of Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho which was swiftly invested into Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, while also bringing in the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Andrew Robertson among others.

After 11 years in total at Merseyside, Edward decided to leave the club and has been the subject of interest from some of Europe’s top sides.

Real Madrid and Paris-Saint Germain have reportedly reached out to the 42-year-old, while Chelsea are also interested following the upcoming departure of Marina Granovskaia.

One issue United would have is that John Murtough is currently occupying the football director role that Edwards would most likely suit.

Murtough was appointed as the Red Devils’ first football director back in March 2021.

The club have struggled to bring in new signings so far this summer window, when all of their rivals at the top of the Premier League have been bringing in new recruits.

New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is on the record as a keen admirer of the way Liverpool operated during Edwards’ time at the club.

At a venture capital event, the American businessman said: ‘If you look at the models that are very successful, Liverpool is a great model. They generate a couple of hundred million more revenue than Chelsea and they generate earnings.’

But it is not difficult to comprehend why United would be attracted to Edwards given the huge success he had at Anfield.

He joined Liverpool in 2011 as head of analytics before a number of promotions eventually saw him take up the role as sporting director.

For now, United are focused on strengthen their squad ahead of next season, with Murtough leading that process – with the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Pau Torres among the players on the club’s radar.
